Google Map is one handy app nowadays that helps navigate or locate unknown areas easier and more accessible. You can have your locations updated too on Google Map. This helps you find specific locations faster and share the locations you want with other people. In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to plot addresses on Google Map from an Excel file.

2 Suitable Examples to Plot Addresses on Google Map from Excel

The main goal of this process is to plot our addresses on Google Map. To do that, we need either a CSV, XLSX, KML, or GPX file. Microsoft Excel helps us to easily make an XLSX file. To summarize the process- we need to make an Excel file, import it into maps, and then save it as our map.

There are two examples of the process to help the steps better- one for plotting addresses within a state and one for plotting addresses in different states. You can use the same steps to plot addresses on a global scale too. Follow the methods for a better understanding or find the one you need from the table of contents above.


1. Plot Addresses from Same State on Google Map from Excel

To plot addresses on Google Map from Excel, you need information about the addresses. This can be the city, state, actual detailed address, latitude-longitude of the locations, etc.

In this case, we are going to plot different addresses that are within a state on Google Maps. We are selecting the following dataset to plot them.

The dataset contains addresses of different companies within California. As shown above, the dataset starts at cell A1. Always have your dataset starting at this position as Google Map can only read files that are or mimic the CSV format. Follow these steps to see how we can plot them on Google Map.

Steps:

  • Once you have the Excel file ready in your hand, save and close it. And then go to the Google Maps.
  • Now select the menu on the upper-left side of the map interface.

  • Next, select Your places from the menu options.

  • Then go to the Maps tab and click on CREATE MAP at the bottom of it.

  • After that, a new window will open up. On the upper left side of the tab, you can find the option called Import as shown in the figure below. Click on it.

  • Next, select Select a file from your device in the new window, navigate to your file location and open the file.

  • After the upload is complete, select the columns that should be used while plotting the address on the map. We are selecting the Address, City, and State from our dataset.

  • Once you have done that, click on Continue.
  • Next, select the title for your marker. And then click on Finish. We are using the name column as our marker name.

As a result of these steps, the addresses of the Excel file will be plotted on Google Map.

You can double-click on the Untitled Map as shown in the figure.

And then add a name and description of the map that helps find it later on and share it with others.

The final output will look something like this.

2. Plot Addresses from Different States on Google Map from Excel

In this example, we will plot addresses across different states on Google Map from an Excel file. We are choosing the following dataset that contains locations from different states.

As has been noted, the dataset should start from cell A1. Follow these steps to see how you can plot addresses in a country on Google Map with the help of Excel.

Steps:

  • Upon completing the dataset, save and close the Excel file. Then go to Google Maps.
  • Then select the menu on the upper-left side of the map interface.

  • Now select Your places from the menu options.

  • Then go to the Maps tab and click on CREATE MAP at the bottom of it.

Things to Remember

  • The dataset containing the information for the addresses should start at cell A1.
  • While creating more than one map, use different files for each one. As Google Maps can only detect the first worksheet of an Excel file up until now.
  • You can also use latitude and longitude instead of city or state to locate and plot addresses. Replace each with the other and the plotting would work fine.

  1. what if you do all this on an iphone 11 and click start to begin the route but doesn’t start? ive completely reset the phone. other random addresses work. turned location on for always. im in IT and can’t seem to find a solution.

      I am so sorry for your situation. But we haven’t worked with the iPhone platform yet. So our solutions are only limited to windows for now.
