About Gridlines in Excel Graph

Excel offers the option of adding gridlines to a graph created on the basis of some gathered data. Gridlines of a graph help to visualize the plotted data easily and make the chart reader-friendly. Usually, the graph shows primary horizontal gridlines by default. But you can change this and add gridlines according to your need and choice. Excel also allows you to remove the gridlines from your graph in case you don’t need them.

2 Suitable Ways to Add Gridlines to a Graph in Excel

In this section, you will find 2 suitable and quick ways to add gridlines to a graph in Excel. Let’s check them now!

You can change the interval of the gridlines of the graph/chart you have created in Excel. For doing so:

  • Firstly, double click on the axis value, and the Format Axis dialogue box will show up at the right end of the worksheet.

  • Now, from the Axis Options icon, change the value of the Major and the Minor units.

Hence, your gridline interval will be changed.

Format Gridlines

You can format the gridlines you have added to your chart. For this:

  • Firstly, click the Chart Elements button> select Gridlines> click More Options.

  • Then, the Format Major Gridlines dialogue box will show up. From here, you can format your gridlines.

Remove Gridlines from Graph

As you can add gridlines to your graph, Excel also allows you to remove the gridlines you have added. Removing gridlines is also as simple as adding them. For removing gridlines from your graph, proceed as below:

  • Here, all you have to do is click on the graph> go to the Chart Design tab> click Add Chart Element> select Gridlines> click the selected gridline to unselect it (i.e. Primary Major Horizontal if it is selected).
  • If more than one gridline is selected then repeat the process for unselecting each of the selected gridlines.

  • Again, you can also remove gridlines by using the Chart Elements option. Just click the Chart Elements button> unmark the Gridlines option.

And your gridlines will be vanished.

Things to Remember

  • Excel allows you to add major as well as minor gridlines for a better visualization of the plotted data.
  • The process of adding and removing gridlines is same.
