What Is Auto Capitalization?
In Microsoft Excel, when you enter data into cells, Excel tries to correct your mistakes and automatically capitalizes the first letter of a sentence. When you insert data in a cell, Excel thinks of it as the first letter of the sentence. As a result, it is also capitalized automatically by Excel.
Let’s have a look at the following screenshot where the text is auto capitalized by default.
5 Steps to Stop Auto Capitalization in Excel
If you want to cancel this Auto Capitalization feature in Excel, you can use the following steps.
In the below-given data set, we have some words and a sentence in which Excel’s Auto Capitalization feature was enabled. We will turn off this feature and afterward we will check whether it is working or not.
Step 1: Go to Files from Ribbon
First, go to the Files tab from the ribbon.
Step 2: Select Options from Excel Home
After that, click on the Options from Excel’s Home. You can find it on the bottom right side of the screen.
Note: You can press ALT + F to open the File menu.
Step 3: Choose Proofing from Excel Options Dialogue Box
Now, a dialogue box will open named Excel Options. Select Proofing from the Excel Options dialogue box.
Note: Also, you may open the Excel Options dialog box directly by pressing ALT + F + T.
Step 4: Click on AutoCorrect Options
After selecting Proofing from the Excel Options dialogue box, click on the AutoCorrect Options as marked on the picture below.
Step 5: Uncheck Capitalize First Letter of Sentences
Now, another dialogue box will pop up. Under the AutoCorrect tab in this dialogue box, you will find Capitalize the first letter of sentences. Make sure that you uncheck the box. Then press OK, and the dialogue box will close.
After that, again press OK in the Excel Options dialogue box.
Then you will be redirected to your Excel workbook. Now, type the words and the sentence into the cells of Column C from Column B.
You can see that Excel is no longer Auto Capitalizing the words.

Things to Remember
- Make sure you uncheck the box to Capitalize the first letter of sentences otherwise Auto Capitalization won’t stop.
