[Solved] Reference isn't valid.

Hi everyone. Newby here. I'm a dinosaur, old. I'm not all the computer literate so any answers in very easy to understand English please. I rarely if ever use Excel. Today I was trying to prepare a spreadsheet. I think very basic. I have created a problem. Now, no matter where I hover the curser, even over the "close" X in the top right corner I get the message. "Reference isn't valid." So now I can't close Excel. This in itself isn't all that much of an issue. The spreadsheet I was working on is not important. I don't care if I lose it. I do have another Excel spreadsheet I use to record blood pressure readings and other medical "stuff". With the current situation I can't access this spreadsheet. That is a worry. all suggestions will be very much appreciated... Mal.

Hello Malt,

This error typically appears when you're using features like PivotTables, Charts, or Data Validation that rely on a specific reference range, and that reference is broken, missing, or incorrectly defined.

Here are a few things you can check:
  • Named Ranges: Make sure any named range you're using still exists and covers valid cells.
  • Source Data Range: Double-check that your source data hasn't been deleted or moved.
  • File Links: If your workbook pulls data from an external file, ensure that the file is accessible and hasn’t been renamed or relocated.
  • Table References: If you’re referencing a table, confirm that the table name hasn’t changed and that it still exists in the workbook.
Let us know what kind of feature or function you were using when the error appeared. Happy to guide you further!
