An Excel theme is a certain look of a worksheet combining specific Color Palettes, Fonts, and Effects. Excel has some built-in themes that can be accessed easily. Apart from that, Excel enables us to create custom themes manually. In this article, I will show you how to create an Excel theme step-by-step.

What Is a Theme in Excel?

A theme is a special look of the worksheets in Excel. Excel themes differ from one another in terms of colors, fonts, and effects.

Excel has some built-in themes. It also offers to make customizable themes. This means you can manually select your preferred colors, fonts, and effects to give a look at your own worksheets.


Steps to Create an Excel Theme

An Excel theme is made of 3 elements mostly. They are,

  • Colors
  • Fonts
  • Effects

Now, I’m going to demonstrate how to select the colors, fonts, and effects to create an Excel theme step-by-step.


Step-1: Selecting Excel Color Palette to Create Theme

To create a custom Excel theme, at first, you have to select a color palette.

For that,

❶ Go to the Page Layout tab.

❷ Click on the Colors drop-down from the Theme group.

Then you will see a lot of built-in color palettes. You can select any of the color palettes from the list.

But if you don’t like any of them, you can create your own color palette.

For that,

❸ Click on Customize Colors commands at the bottom of the drop-down list.

The Create New Theme Colors dialog box will open.

Under the Theme Colors column, you can select your preferred color for Text, Background, Accent, Hyperlink, Followed Hyperlink, etc.

While you pick up a color from the Theme Colors column, you will see a preview in the Sample column.

❹ Insert the name of your created color palette in the Name box.

If you want to reset your color selection, just click on the Reset button.

❺ Finally, click on the Save button to save the color palette.

Step-2: Selecting a Font to Create an Excel Theme

After selecting a color palette, you need to select a font for your Theme.

To select Fonts,

❶ Go to the Page Layout tab.

❷ Click on the Fonts drop-down.

A drop-down list of fonts will appear.

From the list, you choose any font for your Excel theme. But if you don’t like any font from there,

❸ Click on the Customize Fonts command.

The Create New Theme Fonts dialog box will pop up.

  • You can choose your preferred Heading font.
  • Then choose A Body font.

To save your font selection with a name, insert a name in the Name box.

❹ To save your font selection, click on the Save button.

Step-3: Selecting a Theme Effect

After selecting the colors and fonts for the Excel theme, you have to select an effect. Effects are basically different styles of the shares in Excel.

To select an effect,

❶ Go to the Page Layout tab.

❷ Then click on the Effects drop-down.

After that, you will see a list of different effects to apply.

For this instance, I’m selecting the Glow Edge effect.

Step-4: Saving Custom-Made Theme

After choosing the colors, fonts, and effects, you need to save your custom-made theme.

To save,

❶ Go to the Page Layout tab.

❷ Click on the Themes drop-down.

❸ Select Save Current Theme.

The Save Current Theme dialog box will pop up.

❹ Now give the name of your custom-made theme in the File Name box.

❺ Then click on the Save button.

Your theme you will be saved in your specified path.

Apply Custom-Made Excel Theme

If you want to apply your custom made theme,

❶ Go to the Page Layout tab.

❷ Click on the Themes drop-down.

❸ Select Browse for Themes.

❹ Navigate to the folder where you’ve saved your Excel themes.

❺ Click on the Theme to select.

❻ Then click Open.

Now, your custom-made theme will be applied to your Excel sheets.
